The survey conducted by the AA – who has recently launched a new market leading cash ISA – shows that ISAs are still regarded by many as a long-term savings option.

The complex regulations that come with ISAs mean that decision-making is also harder, with 88% of people unsure whether or not they can use cash ISAs as instant-access accounts.

“Everyone able to save should take maximum possible advantage of their tax-free Cash ISA allowance whether they want instant access to their funds or intend to leave it untouched.” said Mark Huggins, director of AA Savings.

In related news, Nationwide – the world’s largest building society – has called upon Chancellor George Osborne to allow the entirety of the annual ISA allowance to be saved in cash. This would be double the level that savers are currently allowed to save in this way.

The current limit placed on cash ISAs is £5,340 – half of the full tax-free allowance – which can be taken up in part or in full through investment or stock ISAs.

This allowance is set to rise to £11,280, with half still allocated to cash ISAs, at the onset of the next tax year beginning in April.

Nationwide has suggested by allowing the full amount to be saved in cash ISAs, first-time buyers will be able to build up larger deposits in a tax-free account, making that first step onto the property ladder easier.

“Nobody likes paying more tax than they have to, but that’s exactly what savers who don’t fully utilize their cash ISA allowance are doing”, says Nationwide’s Head of Savings, Richard Marriott.
“The end of the current tax year is fast approaching, so savers need to act fast to take advantage of this year’s tax-free allowance.”
